GALLERY 1
A figurative painting on fabric of three young women holding each other’s shoulders while standing in a line. Their eyes look towards the viewer and there are two snakes at the bottom of the painting, one red and one blue. The fabric support is patterned with a light purple and pink design that can be seen through the layers of paint.
Leocardia Nyamayaro, ‘The many eves’, 2021. Oil painting on fabric; 148 × 230 cm.

The series of work aims to engage intimately with witchcraft instead of only focusing on the different narratives that exist within the theme. There are various stories in the community that explore superstitions and beliefs about the darkness but there is a need to become more vulnerable with the concept.

I believe that there is trauma that resides within the individual’s body as a result of the curses, oppression and blood shed that is connected to dark magic. Perhaps engaging with the human figure and gesture will reveal the emotional turmoil that lies underneath.

The fabric is more fluid and textured which adds on to the depth and complexity of the project. Ultimately the desire is to understand the relationship between the body and the spirituality through paint.

Leocardia Nyamayaro is a Zimbabwean artist. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 2021 and has exhibited with Womxn and Soul Alphabet. Her paintings are a means to discover the power of storytelling in art and to explore narratives rooted within her life experiences and perspective.
