MANY THREADS
4–26 FEBRUARY 2022
GALLERY 2
A close-up shot of a weaving made from frayed strips of a stained white bed sheet. Small faded metallic stains are spattered, varying from grey to reddish-brown. The white strips are tightly woven together to create an opaque grid pattern.

Many Threads is a new body of work by Sophie G Nixon. Both installation and soft sculpture, this exhibition consists of large-scale wall-based textile artworks; some of which are sewn and finished neatly, others frayed and worn.

Many Threads is composed of material interventions with reclaimed textiles. Through the integration of traditional sewing techniques such as patch-working, weaving and quilting, alongside a more intuitive sewing style, their approach places process above technical perfection.

This body of work engages with the grid pattern of plain woven fabric that is formed by the warp and the weft. In Many Threads, this grid pattern is adopted as a motif, representing relationships, bonds and connections, a material narrative that foregrounds notions of intimacy and repair.

Sophie G Nixon (b. 1996) is a Bachelor of Fine Art (2017) and Honours (2018) graduate from Curtin University. They live in Boorloo/Perth and come from a settler background. Sophie works primarily with second-hand textiles and occasionally plants to create soft sculptures and gentle installations.

Methods of repair and ecological consideration of materials are central throughout their work. Currently, their interests lie in worn and damaged textiles, and playing with colour, form and composition to explore unconventional practices of repair and healing.

Previously, Sophie has exhibited in group shows at Goolugatup Heathcoate (2017), Mundaring Arts Centre (2019), and PS Art Space (2021). They have had residencies at Midland Junction Arts Centre (2019) and Mt Flora (2021), supported by the City of Stirling. Last year, Sophie was awarded the Emerging Artist Award at the City of Belmont’s Art Awards.

Sophie works from their studio at Rook ARI in Carlisle.
